The recent large waves of layoffs, especially in the technology sectors, due to the increase in investment in artificial intelligence for operational processes, are creating strong fear among Americans, who believe that the integration of these new systems could leave them unemployed.
According to the results of a survey carried out by Reuters and Ipsos, it reveals that more than 50% of Americans surveyed fear that AI could take jobs from them or someone in their family, compared to 37% who are not concerned about new systems in the workplace and 10% who preferred not to respond.
According to the report, survey responses were also fairly uniform in terms of profession, educational level, age, and gender; However, university graduates showed a higher level of concern while reporting that they make the most use of AI, compared to those who do not have a higher academic level.
The Ipsos analysis detailed that 50% of university graduates use intelligence regularly, unlike the 34% of people without professional degrees who do not use it.
In recent years, AI has been gaining ground in large corporations, since, among other things, it reduces production costs, automates and streamlines operational processes.
Among the large companies in the technology sector that have announced layoffs due to AI this year are Meta with 8,000 layoffs for AI development, Oracle with 30,000 layoffs for AI infrastructure, Microsoft with 8,750 layoffs for AI servers, eBay with 800 layoffs for automated e-commerce, among others.
