Mexico City authorities seized 59 homemade explosive devices during the inspection of a bus transporting students from the Fashioned Rural School of Ayotzinapa and teachers who were heading to the country’s capital to participate in protests.
The discovery occurred during a security operation carried out on the Mexico-Cuernavaca highway, after the authorities received a citizen complaint about possible risks in one of the vehicles that made up the convoy.
According to official information, elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) inspected several transport units and located the explosive devices hidden in one of the buses.
After the discovery, a non-public specialized in handling explosives proceeded to secure it to avoid risks to passengers and the population.
The authorities reported that the review was carried out peacefully and with the collaboration of the occupants of the units. Subsequently, the buses continued their journey to the country’s capital.
Students and teachers traveled to support the CNTE protestsan organization that maintains a series of mobilizations to demand, among other points, salary improvements and changes to the pension system.
The seizure of the explosives occurs in a context of high tension due to the teacher demonstrations in Mexico City.
Federal authorities reiterated the call for the protests to develop peacefully and within the appropriate framework, while the dialogue tables with representatives of the teaching profession continue.
So far there have been no reports of people arrested in relation to the discovery of the explosive devices, while investigations continue to determine their origin and possible use.
