They say that where a captain rules, a sailor does not rule and precisely that old saying fits what the Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, to choose a new date for the end of classes in Mexico due to the World Cup 2026, after President Claudia Sheinbaum was dissatisfied with the date they had already chosen, June 5.

The president was questioned in her morning conference and there she flatly said that it was not a final decision and after some signs of disagreement from Delgado himself, at the end of the day, At night he had to go out to announce that this Monday, May 11, the technical council will meet again to choose a new end date for courses.

The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) had to back down due to all the controversy generated by this decision to advance the end of courses in the 2025-2026 cycle by 40 days and announce that a new date on June 11 will be analyzed. prioritizing the well-being of students and parents.

This decision sought to calm the spirits heated by the arbitrariness with which the senior SEP official behaved, to the point that President Sheinbaum had to intervene, but above all the lack of capacity of the heads of government of CDMX, Jalisco and Nuevo León, who were the promoters of the initiative to try to mitigate the road conflicts that will be generated by the 2026 World Cup and the lack of completion of many works.

For that reason, Mario Delgado had to go out to give a message to calm the waters, where he stated that next Monday the “best proposal” on the school calendar will be chosen and explained that this measure is to try to find balance between compliance with the effective days of classes, the climatic conditions of Mexico and the logistics of the World Cup.

The proposal provoked criticism in different parts of the country. Parent organizations, specialists and some state governments questioned reducing several weeks of classes throughout Mexico when only Three cities will host the World Cup: Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

So far, school authorities have not released a definitive official calendar with the new dates, although Mario Delgado He did not take his finger off the line that it will be next June 5 when children stop attending classes.

The current calendar originally contemplates the end of classes in mid-July 2026 and a complete of 185 effective days of school activities.
