How many times have you accidentally deleted a text message and then regretted it? This problem, which has always accompanied Android users, finally has a solution. Google Messages has just massively launched its new Trash foldera feature that acts as a security network for all your deleted chats. And yes, it is as useful as it sounds.
The novelty is now available to all users with the stable version 20260327_00_RC00 of the application, so if you don’t see it yet, update Google Messages from the Play Retailer and that’s it.
What is the Google Messages Trash folder and how does it work?
Before this update, delete a conversation in Google Messages permanently and without turning back. One more touch and goodbye forever to that thread of messages. Now, the dynamic has completely changed.
When you delete a chat, it doesn’t go away immediately– Automatically moved to the Trash folder, where it remains for 30 days before being permanently removed. That month of grace is enough for you to reconsider if you really wanted to delete that conversation or if it was a mistake.
When you move a message to the trash, the app shows you a notice: “Chat will be deleted after 30 days” so you always keep in mind how much time you have to recover it. No unpleasant surprises.
Of course, there is one important exception: Android Tear devices have a grace period of only 7 days instead of 30, with the aim of saving storage space. If you use an entry-level phone with Android Tear, you will have to act faster.
Where do I find the Trash folder in Google Messages?
Finding this new section is very simple. You just have to follow these steps:
- Open Google Messages on your Android
- touch your profile photo in the upper right corner
- In the drop-down menu, you will see the option Trash just below “Archived”
Inside the folder, you can see how many messages each conversation has saved in the trash. From there you have two main options: delete everything permanently with “Delete all”, or restore individual conversations or all at once directly to your fundamental chat list. Fast, easy and without complications.
What happens if you receive a new message in a chat that is in the trash?
This is one of the most interesting details of the function. If someone sends you a new message to a conversation that you already sent to the trash, Google Messages does not mix new content with old. Instead, there appears a new thread in your main chat list with only the recent messagewhile previous messages continue to rest in the trash.
It’s a pretty smart solution that avoids confusion and keeps everything organized. You won’t have to search through deleted chats to find the new ones, nor will you lose important messages because they are in the trash.
This update comes after Google announced the feature last month and now it’s done massively available for practically all users. It is worth mentioning that Google Messages continues to establish itself as the dominant messaging app on Android: recently reached 10 billion downloads in the Play Retailer, a figure that speaks for itself of its global reach.
If you haven’t seen the Trash folder on your device yet, update the app to the latest available version. It’s a small change in appearance, but it makes a real difference on a day-to-day basis for anyone who has ever accidentally deleted something, which is basically everyone.
