A Placer County judge sentenced Joseph Foster65 years old, to a sentence of between 75 years and life in prison for the murder of Alwin Schoefer85 years old, occurred in 1992 in the Weimar area.
This way 34-year-old unsolved case closed which investigators say was solved thanks to modern DNA testing that identified Foster as the killer.
Detectives say DNA obtained from evidence collected in 1992 linked Foster to the murder and prompted a new investigation to prosecute him for murder.
According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Schoefer’s wallet, identification and clothing were found in a bag recovered on a Nevada County road. Shortly afterwards, Schoefer was found dead in his Weimar home, which had been burned down.

Placer County’s cold case unit, made up of sheriff’s office detectives working with a prosecutor’s investigator, recovered decades-old files and identified evidence that could be analyzed with accurate DNA technology. Tests returned a match in 2025.
An arrest warrant for murder was subsequently issued and Foster was transferred to Placer County custody on March 18, 2025. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on March 30, 2026, and was sentenced a month later.
According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the Placer County Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted the case and secured Foster’s conviction. Sheriff Wayne Woo publicly praised cold case detectives and prosecutors for their perseverance until the case was resolved.
