The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, He reiterated this Thursday that his Government wants to continue collaborating with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and in strengthening security, respecting “sovereignty”, and highlighted that they are “acting” with results in this regard, after the US president, Donald Trump, once again threatened with intervention in the country.

We are acting. There is an almost 50% reduction in intentional homicides, 2,500 laboratories disableddestroyed, people detained (…) There is a reduction in the flow of fentanyl from Mexico to the United States,” he declared in his daily press conference.

On Wednesday, Trump once again threatened to intervene in Mexico by assuring that if Mexican authorities “don’t do their job” in the fight against drug trafficking, Washington will do so.

The president recalled that it is not “the first time” that the Republican has made these statementswhile he vindicated the work of the Mexican authorities and once again rejected a US intervention to fight drug trafficking.

The bilateral dialogue, as he stressed, has had results within the framework of “mutual respect,” which is why he said he does not want “trust to be broken.”

Sheinbaum affirmed that Mexico’s relationship with its northern neighbor is based on points such as respect for sovereignty and to territorial integrity, as well as shared responsibility and respect.

“That is essential, but there has also been collaboration. We want to continue collaborating as long as we have these four points very clear, both countries, without violating sovereignty,” he stated.

In this way, he asked Washington to recognize that they have a “serious problem” of drug consumption, while urging them to stop arms trafficking to Mexico.

In this sense, Sheinbaum mentioned the recent US National Drug Control Strategy, a document in which “for the first time” they recognize the problem of drug addiction in their society.which noted that it affects 16% of the US population.

He assured that it was Trump himself who asked him in one of his first calls why Mexico did not have this same problem, to which he responded that it was due to “family values” in the country and the government campaign that recognizes drug use as a “public health” problem.

We do not want fentanyl to reach young people in the United States, nor do we want it to reach young people in Mexico, nor anywhere in the world, nor any drug, but there has to be some recognition of the problem from the United States,” he stated.

Since his return to the White House, Trump has threatened on several occasions to intervene in Mexico to fight the cartels because, in his opinion, they “control” the country, something that has been rejected by Sheinbaum as a violation of Mexican sovereignty. EFE
