Five prisoners died during a riot in the Yare prison, located in the state of Miranda, in northern Venezuela.reported the Ministry of Penitentiary Service, after relatives and NGOs reported an irregular situation in that center.
The entity explained that on Monday “a fight broke out between prisoners that turned into a riot at the Yare IlI Capital Region Penitentiary Center”, a “maximum security” establishment intended for the protection of members of criminal gangs.
In addition, he identified the deceased as Keivin Matamoros, Eliecer Córdaba, Erkin Ramos, José Andrade and Jean Carlos Jiménez.
“The Public Ministry has initiated an investigation in order to determine the exact circumstances of what happened”reiterated the office of the Penitentiary Service in its statement.
On Monday, the NGO Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) reported in X an “irregular situation” in the facility and the suspension of family visits, without any explanation.
The OVP indicated that there were rumors of “alleged transfers or an alleged mutiny” and reported the presence of ambulances.
In its statement on Monday, the NGO had asked for information on what happened and published a video of relatives shouting: “We want a visit!”.
“The misinformation of the Delcy Rodríguez regime is recurrent and causes relatives to remain in anxiety (…). This is also torture towards the loved ones of those deprived of liberty,” added the OVP.
