The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortegaraised the tone against his American counterpart, donald trumpdescribing him as “psychologically deranged” during an official event, in a new episode of diplomatic tension between both countries.
According to reports, the speech was given within the framework of the National Peace Day in Managuawhere Ortega harshly criticized Washington’s recent actions, including sanctions targeting members of his family.
“It is a problem of psychological derangement… is not in his five senses“, launched the president, who also accused the United States of applying “terrorist policies” that, according to him, affect world stability.
The verbal attack occurs in a context of growing international pressure on the Nicaraguan government.
Just days before, The United States imposed new sanctions to officials and those close to the regime, including two of Ortega’s sons, amid accusations of corruption and retention of an eye fixed on strategic sectors such as mining.
During his speech, Ortega also questioned US foreign policy in the region and beyond. He criticized the sanctions against Venezuela, the embargo on Cuba and military actions in the Middle East, pointing out that they respond to unilateral decisions.
“If bombs have to be dropped, he decides… without respecting laws or international organizations,” he stated.
In addition, the Nicaraguan president reiterated his position on the case of the Venezuelan leader Nicolas Madurowhom he accused of having been “kidnapped” by the United States, and demanded his return. He also called for an end to hostilities in Iran and the lifting of economic sanctions against several countries.
According to experts cited by international agencies, the confrontational tone could bring new consequences in the bilateral relationship.
Beyond the statements, the episode reflects a moment of high political tension in Latin America, where ideological and strategic differences between governments continue to mark the international agenda.
