The former lieutenant governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfaxdied after allegedly murdering his wife, Cerina Fairfax, and then taking his own life inside their home in Annandale, Fairfax County.
According to information taken from CNN, local authorities confirmed that both were found dead shortly after midnight, after police responded to an emergency call made by one of the couple’s teenage children.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis explained that The case points to a homicide-suicide. According to details, the same firearm was used in both incidents.
Family dispute, possible trigger
Initial investigations indicate that the incident would be related to a ongoing domestic dispute. “It appears to be a complicated or conflictive divorce,” Davis said at a press conference.
The official also revealed that Detectives analyzed camera recordings installed inside the home, which were part of agreements derived from the couple’s separation process.
Furthermore, he recalled that last January Justin Fairfax had reported an alleged assault by his wife; However, this accusation could not be corroborated by the authorities.
Children present during the shooting
One of the most striking elements of the case is that The couple’s two teenage children were inside the house at the time of the shooting. It was one of them who alerted the emergency services.
“It is a tragedy for children to lose both parents.“And even more tragic that they were home when it happened,” Davis stated. “Certainly a fall from grace for a relatively well-known family.”
A political figure marked by controversy
Justin Fairfax, a member of the Democratic Party, served as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022 during Ralph Northam’s administration. He subsequently attempted to run for governor in 2021.
His political career had already faced critical moments, after sexual assault allegations in 2019, which led to calls for his resignation, although he denied these allegations.
After leaving office, Fairfax resumed his career as a lawyerwhile his wife worked as a dentist.
