After protesting before the Permanent Commission as a diplomatic representative, Roberto Lazzeri Montaño, took on the challenge of representing Mexico as ambassador to the Washington government replacing Theyban Moctezuma Barragán.
With 27 votes in favor, eight against and zero abstentions, the appointment of the diplomat in charge of generating the appropriate conditions to establish a cordial relationship with the Trump administration was endorsed.
In his first official statement as ambassador, Roberto Lazzeri pointed out that we must act with a cool head in the face of President Donald Trump’s desire to implement US military and police intelligence operations in Mexican territory, as well as allegedly not continuing with the renewal of the USMCA.
“The president says it, with a cool head, above all. The bilateral relationship between both countries requires, due to its historical density, economic scale and human depth, a representation that combines technical rigor, political sensitivity and commitment to the dignity of Mexico and the Mexican communities abroad,” he wrote on his social networks.

“Lazzeri will promote, from the headquarters of @EmbamexEUA, coordinated work with six priority lines of action. Among the most important are the protection of Mexicans residing in the United States and the link with Mexican-American communities, immigration cooperation, the defense and modernization of the USMCA, cooperation in security and justice, the promotion of border infrastructure, environmental cooperation and water management, and the promotion of cultural and public diplomacy,” the letter indicates.

Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Lazzeri Montaño served as general director of Nacional Financiera (Nafin) and the National Bank of Foreign Trade (Bancomext), the highest position held since joining the public sector in 2005.
The weak point of his appointment to work in Washington is that he lacks experience in the Mexican Foreign Service and that could be used by the US government to benefit its expansionist policy.
