Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense, prepares the US military for the possibility that an event may arise in Cuba that warrants its hypothetical intervention on the Caribbean island.
During an unexpected visit to the scandalous US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the official urged troops to remain alert for action.
“Whatever happens, “The War Department will be prepared and ready for any possible contingency,” he said. in part of a speech delivered.
This statement further increases the pressure exerted for months on the government headed by President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
After having overthrown Nicolás Maduro as president of Venezuela, the supply of oil that the Bolivarian Republic used to send to Cuba ceased, plunging its population into an unprecedented energy crisis, since its electrical industry depends on crude oil and since it does not have it, there are now very few hours of synthetic light in homes, but especially in hospitals.
With respect to mobility, there is a lack of transportation and that makes the transit of goods in the provinces difficult.
The objective of the US government is to break the Cuban authorities so that they give in to opening up the island and handing over the presidency.
Prior to Hegseth’s visit, Francis Donovan, head of Southern Command; and John Ratcliffe, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), also traveled weeks ago to hold talks with Cuban representatives without the details being made known.
All this has soured the atmosphere on the island, as the version of a possible US military intervention is gaining more and more strength.
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, recently declared that the “probability” of reaching an agreement to open the island to foreign investment is complex and, given Donald Trump’s interest in overthrowing the current government, the option would be through intervention.
Nevertheless, Bruno Rodríguez, Cuban Foreign Minister, anticipated that any military action against his country could lead to a “bloodbath.”
“The US government builds, day after day, a fraudulent file to justify the ruthless economic war against the Cuban people and the eventual military aggression. Cuba neither threatens nor desires war,” he said in a speech.
Citing intelligence sources on condition of not revealing their identity, the news site Axiosmentions that Cuba acquired 300 combat drones to use in the event of starting a war that puts its sovereignty at risk.
