A Hispanic inmate escaped this Sunday of the Men’s Community Reentry Program (MCRP) in Los Angeles, reported the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
In a press release, CDCR said state agents are searching for inmate José Barrios, 24after the Hispanic man took off his GPS tracking device and escaped from the prison shortly before 2:30 p.m.
According to the CDCR, Barrios could have escaped from the area in a white carwithout providing further details.

Barrios was described as a Hispanic man, 5 feet 8 inches tall (1.73 meters), weighing approximately 157 pounds (71 kilograms). He has brown eyes and black hair.

“Officers immediately began a search. and conducted an emergency recount of the MCRP, and Barrios was confirmed missing,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

The CDCR said the department’s Office of Correctional Security and local law enforcement agencies have been notified and they are collaborating in the search for the Hispanic inmate.
According to the CDCR, Barrios was serving a seven-year sentence for second-degree robbery. aggravated by use of a firearm. The Hispanic man was booked into prison on September 27, 2023 from custody in Los Angeles County.
“The MCRP is a voluntary program for incarcerated men who meet eligibility criteria“, explained the CDCR.

According to the department, approved participants must serve the remainder of their sentence in the communityinstead of being held in a state prison.
“Since 1977, 99% of incarcerated people who have escaped or abandoned an adult institution, a camp, a place in a state rehabilitation program or a community rehabilitation program has been recaptured“, assured the CDCR.
