The BMW M2a compact, powerful and rear-wheel drive model, became a reference for those seeking pure sensations behind the wheel. However, the German brand decided to take an important step to the generation of 2027.

The big news is the incorporation of the M xDrive system, an all-wheel drive technology that debuts in the history of the M2.

The decision seeks to improve the use of available power and offer more effective behavior in different driving conditions without losing the sporty character that distinguishes the model.
Faster without increasing power
Although the drive system significantly changes the personality of the vehicle, BMW keeps the well-known 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology intact.
The engine develops 480 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The difference is in how that power reaches the asphalt. Thanks to the new system, The M2 manages to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Using the optimized output function, the figure can be reduced to 3.4 seconds.
This is an in fact intensive improvement compared to the rear-wheel drive version, especially for those looking for the best possible performance both on the road and on the track.
A system designed to maintain the essence
The arrival of all-wheel drive might make you think that the M2 is abandoning its roots, but BMW assures that this is not the case. The system was configured to maintain a strong preference for the rear axle.
Under normal conditions, most of the power is still sent to the rear wheels. Only when the situation requires greater grip or acceleration, the system distributes part of the force to the front axle.
In addition, drivers who prefer a more traditional experience will be able to activate 2WD mode, which disconnects the participation of the front axle and returns the M2 to the classic behavior that so many fans value.
Technology inherited from the competition
Another important novelty is the introduction of BMW M Ignite, a technology directly inspired by motorsports.
This system uses a pre-chamber combustion process that improves efficiency when the engine works under high loads.. According to the brand, the solution will allow maintaining high levels of performance while helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The incorporation of this technology will also serve as an unfriendly for future BMW M developments, especially at a time when environmental regulations are increasingly demanding.
The new BMW M2 2027 M xDrive will begin arriving at dealerships during the summer of 2026. Although the company has not yet confirmed the official price, various estimates suggest that it could exceed the $70,000 dollarsplacing itself above the rear-wheel drive versions.
