The former president Mexican Andrés Manuel López Obrador once again broke the silence he had maintained since the end of his mandate and reappeared publicly with a letter in which he expressed his “unconditional” support for the president of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, while criticizing President Donald Trump for the direction that, in her opinion, the bilateral relationship between both countries has taken.

The document, dated June 3 in Palenque, Chiapas, represents López Obrador’s broadest political statement since he left the Presidency in October 2024 and emerges amid a period of growing diplomatic tensions between Mexico and the United States over issues related to drug trafficking, migration and security.

In the letter, titled “For the good of all, let the other Trump return,” the former president maintained that some sectors of the US government seek to weaken the ruling party. Morena and favoring Mexican opposition forces through political and media pressure.

According to López Obrador, the recent actions and accusations coming from Washington respond more to internal political and electoral interests than to a genuine concern about phenomena such as drug trafficking or irregular migration.

The objective is to hold Mexico responsible for internal problems in the United States and use those issues for political purposes,” the former governor stated in his message.

Remember a cooperative relationship with Trump

López Obrador contrasted the honest position of the US administration with the relationship it maintained with Trump during the 2018-2021 period, when both coincided as heads of state.

He recalled that during those years, relevant agreements were reached on trade, immigration and bilateral cooperation, including the promotion of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), in addition to coordination mechanisms implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The former president also evoked episodes that he considered examples of understanding between both governments. Among them, he mentioned the negotiations that avoided the imposition of tariffs on Mexican products and Washington’s decision not to classify Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations during his administration.

In addition, recalled the case of the former Secretary of National Defense, Salvador Cienfuegos, detained in the United States in 2020. López Obrador stated that he then personally asked Trump to review the file and that the US president allowed the case to be transferred to the Mexican authorities.

In the former president’s opinion, those episodes reflected a relationship based on direct communication and mutual respect. After questioning the New Yorker’s radical change in position, López Obrador partially exempted the president and directed his batteries towards the new inner circle of the Oval Office.

He stated that the Republican president is currently politically kidnapped by advisors whom he called “inexperienced, resentful and fanatics.” that have dragged it to make wrong decisions and extreme positions against its neighbor to the south.

AMLO comes out of retirement to support Sheinbaum and denounce US “interventionism”

Support for Sheinbaum and criticism of Washington advisors

Much of the letter is dedicated to supporting the management of President Claudia Sheinbaumwhom he described as a responsible and prudent leader in managing the relationship with the United States.

López Obrador assured that the honest head of the Executive has acted with firmness and institutional respect in the face of external pressures and affirmed that she represents “the best president of Mexico of our time.”

However, He maintained that he has observed a significant change in Trump’s political behavior regarding Mexico. According to his interpretation, this transformation would be influenced by advisors and collaborators who promote more radical and confrontational positions.

The former president pointed out that the US president has surrounded himself with advisors who lack a long-term strategic vision and who have contributed to deteriorating the bilateral relationship.

The letter concludes with a direct call to Trump to reconsider some of the decisions made by his administration. and resume the style of dialogue that characterized the relationship between both governments during their first mandate.

As of press time, neither the White House nor President Sheinbaum had issued an official response to the message spread by the former Mexican president.
