The United States government implements a health emergency during the 2026 World Cup, as in other parts of the world, due to the Ebola alert.
To this end, three airports have been set up to serve travelers who are or have been to the aforementioned countries.
“At the global level there are some restrictions on arrival to the United States. So, for example, Americans and permanent residents who have been in the countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the last 21 days can only enter through three specific airports,” explained Natalia Molano, Spanish-language spokesperson for the State Department.
The airports enabled for this purpose are Washington Dulles, in Virginia; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Global Airport, in Atlanta, Georgia, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, in Houston, Texas.
“The preserve an eye on that we are carrying at this moment will apply to all passengers, including citizens and residents who have been present in these countries,” Molano insisted.
The official did not require special attention for travelers from Mexico, because the president of that country, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced a health protocol in this regard.
However, the US ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, stated in X that there is coordination between both countries, in addition to Canada.
“As our countries prepare for the 2026 World Cup, the largest sporting event in history, the US, Mexico and Canada are coordinating efforts on all fronts, including public health measures related to the Ebola outbreak, to help ensure this tournament is the safest and most memorable ever,” Johnson said.
Other recommendations for travelers to the United States
Spokesperson Molano reminded travelers to the United States to check their passport and the type of visa, which is valid.
“It is very important that, obviously, they check their passport, that the visa is valid, that when interacting with officers, law enforcement officials, for example, from the airport, ports of entry, that they be honest, that if they have any questions about the laws, that they ask them, that they follow the laws,” he recalled.
He also indicated that federal authorities will maintain operations to prevent the use of weapons, in addition to drug trafficking and the purchase of irregular or contraband merchandise.
“We must see security checks in the stadiums so that no weapons enter, for example,” he explained. “Drones are not allowed. That is something very particular that law enforcement officials in the United States are monitoring a lot, because they have become a security threat,” he warned.
