The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated this Tuesday that Leo XIV’s “humanist” reflection on manmade intelligence is “very interesting” in his first encyclical, where the pope maintains that it has “to be disarmed” of the “logics that transform it into domination, exclusion and death.”
“Very interesting and also its humanist reflection at the end. That we do not get carried away only by the use of technology“If not, let’s question ourselves, regulate and think about the future of humanity,” declared the president in her daily press conference when questioned about the papal encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’.
Sheinbaum said that it is “very worth it” to seek the document “whether one is Catholic or not” and highlighted Leo XIV’s vision of “closeness to the poorest.”
He also added that the pope presents issues such as who owns the social networks or who generates the algorithm, while describing the title of the first encyclical (Great Humanity) as “exceptional” “for us who are humanists.”
“It is very interesting because it not only talks about the importance of the regulation of man-made intelligence, but also says by whom it is controlled.“, he stressed.
The president read some paragraphs of the document and added that they are issues that have to be addressed to debate “what we have to do from Mexico.”
In his encyclical, Leo XIV explained that intelligence is man made “it is changing many aspects of our lives” and it is “also strongly changing the way in which conflicts are being carried out,” which is why he explained that he felt “responsible” for giving the Church’s vision on that issue.
The Mexican president has invited Pope Leo XIV to visit Mexico in 2026. EFE
