Google offered a first look at its long-awaited smart glasses within the framework of the Google I/O 2026confirming its development in conjunction with Samsung and announcing its arrival on the market for the fall 2026. The announcement marks the official entry of the Android ecosystem into the smart glasses segment, competing directly with the Ray-Ban Meta from Designate Zuckerberg’s company.

What are Android XR Audio Glasses?

The new glasses are part of Android XRthe extended reality platform that Google developed together with Samsung and Qualcomm. Unlike digital reality headsets, these glasses are committed to “invisible computing”: without integrated screens, with a lightweight design and all the intelligence concentrated in the assistant Gemini. Google and Samsung officially call them as “lustrous eyewear” or smart glasses.

This first model is audio only. All information output is done through speakers integrated into the frames, privately, without the people around you being able to hear the responses. The entrance, for its part, combines 12 megapixel cameras and microphones that allow Gemini to “see” and “hear” the same thing as the user in precise time.

Design: Gentle Monster and Warby Parker

Far from the futuristic style of other XR devices, Google opted for design as the main Trojan horse. To this end, it announced two collections in collaboration with renowned brands in the optical world:

  • Gentle Monster: Disruptive yet refined designs, known for their avant-garde aesthetics
  • Warby Parker: a classic and timeless approach that prioritizes everyday elegance

Only two designs from each collection were revealed at the event, as a preview of a broader line that will be presented soon.

The entire experience of the glasses revolves around Google’s AI assistant. To activate it, just touch the side of the saddle or pronounce “Hi there Google”. These are the main confirmed functions:

  • Ask about what you see: Identify nearby restaurants, cloud formations, confusing road signs, or any object in front of you
  • Smart navigation: The glasses know your position and orientation to offer you pure flip-by-flip directions, with additional stops based on your preferences
  • Hands-free communication– Manage calls, send texts and ask Gemini to summarize missed messages without taking out your phone
  • Capture and edit photos/videos: With a single command you take a photo and use the model Nano Banana to remove background distractions or add creative effects (“Hi there Google, take a photo and put funny hats on everyone”)
  • Translation in precise time: Translates both speech and written texts—menus, signs—with audio that reproduces the tone and pitch of the authentic voice
  • Multi-step task management: Gemini can prepare your coffee order on DoorDash while your phone stays in your pocket; you only confirm the final order
  • Integration with apps: Call an Uber, practice languages with Mondoly, and more, all with voice commands

Compatibility and availability

One of the most important surprises of the announcement was the iPhone compatibility. Unlike other devices in the Google ecosystem, these glasses can be connected to both Android phones and iOS devices, considerably expanding their potential market.

Regarding availability, the launch is confirmed for fall 2026although Google and Samsung have not yet revealed details about price, battery life or the final weight of the frames. What is clear is that the hardware was developed by Qualcomm.

How much Google smart glasses could cost

Audio glasses are just the first step. Google confirmed that it is working on a second version with integrated screen which will display visual information directly in the user’s field of view. According to previous leaks, this model with HUD (heads-up point to) could arrive in 2027 and its price would be around $900 dollars.

For now, the first audio models are outlined with an estimated price of between $379 and $499 dollarspositioning itself directly against Meta’s range of smart glasses. However, Google has not yet given official figures on the launch cost.
