This Monday, the American energy company NextEra Energy announced the acquisition of utility company Dominion Energy for an agreement of $67,000 million dollars and with this merger give way to what will be one of the largest regulated electricity companies in the world.

The agreement is also consolidated in the midst of a significant increase in the demand for electricity due to the strong investment in artificial intelligence, lThe creation of data centers and an inevitable rise in energy costs.

In this regard, John Ketchum, president and CEO of NextEra Energy, said in a statement that “the demand for electricity is increasing at a pace unprecedented in decades. Projects are becoming larger and more complex. Customers need affordable, reliable energy now, not years from now”.

With more than 100 years in the industry, NextEra Energy, Inc. has a generation capacity of approximately forty five,900 megawatts, It has a staff of 14,000 employees between the United States and Canada and its revenues reach up to $17 billion, making it on the Fortune 500 list.

While Dominion Energy, with 43 years in the market, has become one of the main suppliers of electricity and pure gasoline in the US, as well as a leading operator in offshore wind and photo voltaic energy.

Therefore, the agreement between both companies, which will operate under the name of NextEra Energy and where the shareholders of NextEra will have 74.5% and Dominion will own 25.5%, will serve approximately 10 million customers in Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

As part of the merger that is expected to close in mid-to-late 2027, John Ketchum will be president and CEO of the resulting company; besides, Dominion customers in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina will receive credits of up to $2.25 billion over two years.

Finally, according to the statement, both companies intend with this agreement to continue satisfying the demand for electricity while remaining affordable for their customers.
