One of the 10 officials from the state of Sinaloa accused by the United States government for alleged links to drug trafficking is already in the hands of the authorities.

It is about Gerardo Merida Sanchezformer Secretary of Public Security of Sinaloa, who on May 11 entered from Hermosillo, Sonora, and crossed through the Nogales Garita to Arizona to surrender.

This was announced by the Security Cabinet of the Mexican government itself, noting that it maintains institutional communication with the US authorities, within the framework of international cooperation mechanisms.

Mérida Sánchez, who is accused of alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartelwill be transferred to New York City to be placed at the disposal of the Federal Court of Southern New York.

Documents from the District Court of Arizona indicate that Mérida Sánchez is accused by the United States Department of Justice of allegedly receiving bribes from the faction of Los Chapitosof the Sinaloa Cartel, to protect their criminal operations and protect their activities with police support.

The accusation indicates that the man, who was in charge of the state police between September 2023 and December 2024, gave protection and warnings to the prison structure led by Ivan and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazarfor the transfer of narcotics north of the Río Bravo.

“As Secretary of Public Security of Sinaloa, Sánchez received bribes from Los Chapitos and in exchange, he gave Los Chapitos, among other things, advance warnings of authorities raids on drug laboratories, so that Los Chapitos could move their drugs and laboratory equipment before the raids,” the indictment states.
