An X user known as @cprkrn recovered on May 13, 2026 approximately 5 BTC, valued at more than $400,000, from a pockets which he had not had access to in more than a decade. He achieved this with the help of Claudethe assistant intelligence man made from Anthropic, in what has already been reported as one of the most striking cases of cryptocurrency recovery with AI.
How Claude found what no one else could
The story began long before the rescue. The user had purchased those Bitcoin around 2014 or 2015, but eventually lost access to his pockets due to a password issue. For years he tried to recover them on his own, spending hundreds of dollars on recovery services, and never got anywhere.
That’s when he made an unconventional decision: he uploaded the entire contents of his old college computer to Claude. Files, notes, backups, everything. More than 1 gigabyte of historical data which the model analyzed for clues.
What Claude found was a pockets backup file from 2019, before the password change, which was still encrypted with a key that the user had written down in a notebook from his university days. The computer virus that blocked everything for years
Here comes the most interesting technical detail. The user is no stranger to recovery tools. I had tried to use btcrecovera widely used open source utility for decrypting Bitcoin wallets. The problem is that it didn’t work.
Claude identified why. The tool had a computer virus in the decryption logic: it was concatenating shared key with password in wrong order. A subtle, almost imperceptible error that made all generated combinations invalid.
Once Claude corrected that logic, the process worked. This is what the model did step by step:
- Located the old pockets file among hundreds of unclassified files
- Identified the computer virus in btcrecover and corrected the concatenation sequence
- Ran the decryption process with the corrected logic
- He extracted the private keys in WIF format (Pockets Import Layout)
What this case tells us about AI and crypto
What we see here is not magic or hacking. Claude did not “crack” any cryptographic encryption, something that would be practically impossible. What he did was something more valuable in this context: massive unstructured data analysis and staunch-time code debugging.
The difference with a human is not intelligence, it is scale and patience. Going through more than a gigabyte of old files looking for specific patterns is exactly the type of task that AI excels at. And correcting a computer virus in a third-party tool, with sufficient context, is something that Claude handles with ease.
What this case does raise is an important reflection for any crypto holder: store private keys and seed phrases neatly and securely It is still as important today as it was ten years ago. AI can be an extraordinary ally, but it is no substitute for good security hygiene from the start.
