Jason Collinsformer player of the NBA and recognized for becoming the first openly gay player in playing one of the main professional leagues in the country, died at the age of 47 due to brain canceraccording to his family this Tuesday.

The former center had revealed in recent months that he was facing stage 4 glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain tumor. After undergoing an experimental treatment in Singapore, he managed to return to the United States and participate in some public activities, including the All-Star Weekend held in Los Angeles. However, the disease reappeared and he died at home accompanied by his family.

In a statement released by the league, those close to him expressed: ““We are heartbroken to share that Jason Collins, our beloved husband, son, brother and uncle, has passed away after a courageous fight against glioblastoma.”. They also added: “Jason transformed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him, as well as those who admired him from a distance.”
