A student died after being seriously injured when a tree collapsed on a playground at Winthrop Traditional Facultyin the town of Melrose, Massachusetts.
The incident occurred Monday afternoon, the Melrose Fire Department confirmed to ABC Files’ Boston affiliate WCVB-5.
Aerial images broadcast by American media showed the tree fallen on a children’s recreational structure within the school grounds.
Authorities confirm the death
Public Schools Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis issued a joint statement Tuesday confirming the child’s death.
“It is with deep sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured has died,” they indicated in the official message, in which they also expressed condolences to the affected family.
The statement stated that Two other people – another student and an adult – who were also injured in the incident have already been discharged. after receiving medical attention.
Local authorities activated psychological support resources and grief management programs, urging students, families and educational professionals to make use of these services due to the emotional impact of the event.
Climatic conditions and evaluation of the tree
Witnesses pointed out that At the time of the accident, there were strong gusts of wind in the area. However, community representatives indicated that the tree, located on nearby property linked to the historic Phineas Upham Dwelling, had recently been inspected without showing signs of risk.
Authorities continue to evaluate the circumstances of the incident, while the Melrose community faces a day of mourning marked by the tragedy.
