A man identified as Robert Schreiber, 42, was charged with multiple crimes after allegedly breaking into a home in Patchogue, Long Island, and stabbing his ex-partner’s son.

According to a press release from the Suffolk County Police Department, the attack occurred on the morning of April 18, just one day after the woman ended the relationship and kicked him out of the home.

Attack while the victim was sleeping

According to authorities, Schreiber entered the home through an unlocked window while the occupants were sleeping. Subsequently, He went to the room of the victim, a 22-year-old young man, and stabbed him at least seven times.

Relatives present managed to intervene, allowing the young man to escape and the emergency services to be notified.

Officers responded to the scene and transported the victim to NYU Langone Clinic, where he was treated for serious injuries.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and, according to the report, he was in possession of the knife allegedly used in the attack.

Charges and judicial process

Schreiber faces charges of attempted murder, burglary, assault, possession of a weapon, harassment and other crimes. He remains detained on bail while the judicial process progresses.

Authorities indicated that he could face a sentence of up to 25 years in prison if convicted. His next appearance is scheduled for May 28, 2026.

District Attorney Raymond Tierney said the case shows how domestic violence can intensify after the end of a relationship, underscoring authorities’ commitment to prosecuting these crimes.

The incident comes amid other recent violent events on Long Island, including a double stabbing homicide that remains under investigation, which has sparked concern in the community.
