This fight represents an opportunity for the man from Guadalajara to regain ground in the division after having lost its status as champion undisputed against Terence Crawford last September.
For his part, Mbilli reaches this commitment as the absolute monarch of the organization after Crawford’s category movement, although his career has not yet enjoyed mass recognition in the international market.
Questions about the quality of the opponent
In an interview granted to Fight Hub TVthe steady WBC light heavyweight champion, David Benavidezwas blunt when qualifying the choice of rival for the Mexican.
The fighter considers that there are other names with greater relevance and sporting merit than the French boxer to star in a show of this caliber in Saudi territory.
The posture of David Benavidez joins a series of previous criticisms where he has indicated that Álvarez avoids high-risk matchups against top 168-pound contenders.
For the “Red Flag”, the inclusion of Mbilli in the main card does not meet the expectations of fans who seek to see the best possible combinations in the ring.
Diego Pacheco’s proposal as an alternative
During his speech, David Benavidez suggested that Diego Pacheco would have been a much more logical and attractive option for the public. Having shared training sessions with Pacheco, the Mexican-American highlights the qualities and level of popularity that he has recently achieved, surpassing in visibility what Álvarez’s steady rival offers.
Textually, David Benavidez declared for Fight Hub TV: “Nobody wants to see that shit.” [Mbilli vs Canelo]. I think it would have been better if he had fought Diego Pacheco. “Diego Pacheco is much more famous than Mbilli.” These words reflect the fighter’s frustration with the direction that negotiations have taken in the super middleweight division.
