Jimmy Kimmel’s host referred, again, to his controversy with the White House. According to the comedian, his joke about Melania Trump had a positive consequence: brought the president and first lady closer.
“Our main couple, Donald and Melania… seem to be closer than ever,” Kimmel commented during his Wednesday night monologue. “And I like to think that I had something to do with that.”he added amidst laughter from the audience.
To support his theory, Kimmel showed a video of the Trumps at a dinner held on Wednesday in honor of Kings Charles III and Camilla of England, during their state visit to the United States.
In the images you can see the couple entering the event holding hands. However, the moment became awkward when, during the photo session with the monarchs, Melania let go of Trump’s hand, leading to a strange silent interaction.
The program did a close-up of the hands, showing how the president He tried to pick them up first with his little finger and then intertwine them again.
“Considering the week I spent with the first couple, I’m just going to say it’s a completely regular way of interacting between two people who are very much in love“he joked
The controversy between Kimmel and the Trumps
Controversy broke out earlier in the week, when Kimmel hosted an “alternative” White House correspondents dinner, after the Trump administration broke the tradition of hiring a comedian for the annual event.
fue there where the host described the first lady as a “pregnant widow,” a comment that many considered in bad taste, especially because two days later, an alleged gunman opened fire at the resort where the official dinner was being held, although no one was injured.
In response, the president and first lady harshly attacked Kimmel on social media. Donald Trump called for his “immediate firing by Disney and ABC,” while Melania wrote on X: “People like Kimmel should not have the opportunity to come into our homes every night to spread hate.”
The White House communications chief went so far as to call the presenter a “despicable human being.”
Despite criticism and pressure, which included a move by the Trump administration ordering Disney to advance the renewal of its stations’ licenses, Kimmel remained defiant.
In his monologue on Monday, he was grateful that no one was hurt in the shooting and defended his joke: “It was obviously a joke about their age difference and the happy expression we see on his face every time they are together. In no way was it a call for murder“he explained.
