The new project of ford without asking permission he entered a totally historic category. It is not a street model nor does it pretend to be, but what it has just achieved on the track forces us to stop for a second and look at the figures calmly.

The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 does not play at being fast, it is in an almost exaggerated way.

In a demonstration that left more than one with their mouths open, This electric dragster signed a record that places it at the top of its category, demonstrating that extreme acceleration is no longer the exclusive territory of the combustion engine.

A speed laboratory on wheels

The world of bolt racing has always been a terrain where everything comes down to one thing, arriving first in a straight line. In this scenario, Ford decided to take electrification to its most radical version.

This project does not seek mass production or dealerships, it is rather a rolling laboratory where the brand experiments how far it can push electric technology when the goal is pure speed.

The number that changes everything

The big hit on the table came with his passage through the quarter mile. The Cobra Jet 2200 clocked in at 6.87 seconds and reached a speed of 221 mph. The mark was achieved in front of the public at an NHRA event in Charlotte, which gave the moment even more impact.

To put it in context, even some of the world’s fastest electric cars in commercial versions, such as the Rimac Nevera, move in figures close to 8 seconds in this test.

The name 2200 is not coincidental. ANDThis dragster mounts two electric motors that together deliver 2,200 horsepower. The figure is brutal, but Ford did not stop at adding power.

They also worked to reduce weight to the extreme, with a tubular chassis, carbon fiber bodywork and solutions designed exclusively for competition. Each component was optimized to gain thousandths.

Engineering designed to control the wild

So much instantaneous power is of no use if it cannot be transmitted to the ground. That is why the transmission system is one of the most curious points of the project.

The Cobra Jet 2200 incorporates a five-speed clutchless transmission and a take care of an eye on system that helps dose power delivery. The design is easy but critical, to prevent the car from losing traction at the key moment.

It also adds advanced safety systems such as pyrofuses that can cut off the high voltage in an emergency, as well as external intervention protocols coordinated with the race organization.

Ford had already been flirting with extreme electrification in projects such as the SuperVan 4.2 or the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, but this dragster takes the concept to another level.
