The tension between entertainment and politics escalated again after the confrontation between comedian Jimmy Kimmel and President Donald Trumpafter a joke aired days before the attempted attack during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

The controversy broke out after a sketch on the Jimmy Kimmel Stay! program, where the presenter launched a joke directed at the first lady. The comment went relatively unnoticed until, after the shooting that occurred during the weekend dinner, it was pointed out by the president himself as an alleged call to violence.

During his monologue on Monday, Kimmel responded directly to the allegations. “It was not, under any circumstances, an incitement to murder, and they know it,” he stated, emphasizing that his career has been marked by a critical stance towards armed violence. The driver also described the incident as “traumatic and terrifying,” despite the fact that no fatalities were reported.

The reaction from the White House was immediate. Through its social network, Trump expressed outrage and called for action against the comedian: “Disney and ABC should immediately fire Jimmy Kimmel,” he wrote. Along the same lines, the first lady harshly criticized the presenter, ensuring that figures like him “should not have the opportunity to enter our homes every night to spread hate.”

Kimmel defended his position by appealing to freedom of expression: “As Americans, we have the right to freedom of expression,” he noted on his show, insisting that satire is a legitimate tool within public discourse.

It is not the first time that the comedian has faced political pressure. On previous occasions, His comments have generated discomfort in conservative sectorsand even caused temporary pauses in their program. However, this time the context is different: the temporal proximity between the joke and the attempted attack raised the tone of the conflict.

Political communication experts warn that These types of confrontations reflect an increasingly tense climate between public figureswhere humor can quickly become a point of friction. They also highlight that directly linking comedy to acts of violence can be problematic if there is no clear evidence.

Meanwhile, Neither ABC nor Disney have issued an official position. The controversy, however, continues to grow and raises an uncomfortable question: where does satire end and public accountability begin?
