US on alert: almost 50 million people under threat of tornadoes and severe storms

Nearly 50 million people remain under alert in the Plains and Midwest regions due to a new episode of severe weather that will last from Sunday to Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The system comes after a weekend of destructive storms that have already left at least one person dead in the state of TexasABC Files reviewed.

Confirmed tornadoes and damage in Texas

In Smart County, Texas, authorities confirmed that a EF-2 rated twister It impacted the town of Runaway Bay with winds of up to 135 mph.

The phenomenon was part of a supercell that also generated hail the size of baseballs and strong gusts of windcausing significant structural damage and the displacement of dozens of families.

The National Weather Service also confirmed that the death recorded in the area was a direct consequence of the twister.

For Sunday, Forecasters issued a level 3 of 5 “enhanced” risk across large swaths of Kansas, as well as parts of Missouri and Nebraska.

Cities such as Wichita, Kansas City and Beatrice are within the highest threat corridor, where tornadoes, severe hail and destructive winds could develop beginning at noon.

Additionally, a flood alert was issued in areas of Kansas City and St. Joseph due to rainfall accumulations that could exceed two inches.

Extension of the system towards Monday

The storm system will move toward the northeast of the country on Monday, affecting from the Mississippi Valley to the Midwest.

States such as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Arkansas are under warnings for severe storms that could include isolated tornadoes, large hail, heavy rain and destructive winds.

Cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville and Milwaukee also appear on the risk map.
Authorities ask for maximum caution

The National Weather Service warned that The greatest storm activity will be concentrated during the afternoon and evening of Mondaywhen atmospheric conditions will be more favorable for the formation of severe systems.

Authorities urged the population to stay informed and prepared for possible evacuation orders or emergency alerts, due to the potential widespread impact of the weather system.

The current episode adds to a series of extreme weather events recorded in recent weeks in the center of the country, consolidating a pattern of high atmospheric instability that continues under close monitoring by meteorologists.
