The president of the United States, Donald Trump, denied that his government had extended an official invitation to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.to attend the next G20 summit in Miami, although he acknowledged that his participation could be beneficial.
“No, it is not. But if (Putin) came it would be very useful,” Trump declared when questioned about reports suggesting a formal rapprochement between Washington and Moscow (Source: statements at the White House).
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin has avoided attending the G20 summitsamid growing international pressure and diplomatic isolation.
Added to this is that in 2023 the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against the Russian president for alleged crimes related to the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russian territory.
Despite considering that his presence would be useful for global dialogue, Trump acknowledged that Putin’s attendance at the summit is unlikely: “To be honest, I doubt he will come.”
However, he left the door open to international dialogue, “I don’t know anything about the invitation. But if I were invited… I am of the opinion that we should talk to everyone.”
Trump also assured that his administration continues to work to achieve an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict, which has dragged on for more than four years.
Russia’s possible participation in multilateral forums such as the G20 continues to be a controversial issue, in a context marked by geopolitical tensions and questions about Moscow’s role on the international stage.
