Recently, the largest retail chain in the United States, Walmart announced that it is preparing to apply mandatory changes at the checkouts and entrances of its stores due to a new law, which could change the way customers place products and items in carts.

According to a statement from the retailer, due to the “labeling” law, Walmart customers in the state of California will see a transformation in certain products and items, that now, after a new identification system, they will be classified as ultra-processed or not.

With the impetus of this new bill known as AB224, consumers will be able to easily identify which foods are ultra-processed and which are not, since These will be labeled “California Certified.”which will indicate that they contain more natural ingredients.

If this bill presented by Democratic legislator Jesse Gabriel is approved, it could be launched in 2028. The measure comes after growing concern about the obesity rate and other diseases related to high consumption of processed foods.

Recently, Gabriel stated that “like the USDA organic label, this new seal will provide consumers with clear, reliable information and make it easier for them to find healthier foods free of harmful additives. Parents Shouldn’t Need a PhD in Chemistry to Understand What They’re Feeding Their Kids”.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the daily consumption of processed foods in adults and children in the United States amounts to 62%, and Researchers no longer only link it to obesity, but also to type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Given the proposal to modify the way in which certain foods are consumed, some manufacturing companies have already stated that these changes could greatly harm the industry, while others are changing the quality of their products using more natural ingredients.
