US plans military force based on AI to confront cartels in Latin America

The United States Army announced that it is creating a new autonomous military force based on artificial intelligencean initiative that will be part of the reinforcement of operations of the Southern Command in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, with the aim of supporting different missions in the region and facing challenges in various areas.

New military unit with autonomous systems and AI

According to a statement from the Southern Command, the new command will be focused on the use of autonomous, semi-autonomous and unmanned platformsintegrated with artificial intelligence, with the aim of counteracting threats in different operational areas.

The initiative seeks to link tactical missions with long-term strategic effectsstrengthening the military response capacity in the region.

Objectives: drug trafficking and disaster response

The announcement was made by the commander of the Southern Command, Francis L. Donovanwho explained that the new force will have as its mission dismantle and weaken narcoterrorist networks and cartel structuresin addition to responding to crises derived from large-scale natural disasters.

The development of this unit will be supported by artificial intelligence systems that will allow greater operational autonomy. According to the US command, the objective is to improve the capacity for action from the seabed to space and the cyber environment.

Donovan stated that they seek to take advantage of the “superiority of the American defense ecosystem” through the deployment of technological innovations and greater cooperation with regional partners.

Military modernization and regional coordination

The project is part of the initiative called GAutonomous Defense Warfare group (DAWG), promoted by the former United States Department of Defense, now known as the Department of War.
This initiative seeks to integrate artificial intelligence and autonomous systems into combat operations to modernize military capabilities.

In an appearance before Congress in March, Donovan said the goal is to deploy modernized and efficient forces within the Southern Command area of ​​influence, in order to increase operational capacity, data sharing and coordination with allied forces.

The United States Southern Command is one of six unified commands of the United States Armed Forces, each with responsibility for a specific geographic region.
