Ed Markey, a legislator from Massachusetts, blames the Trump administration for having caused with the war in Iran “an energy apocalypse” in the Strait of Hormuz anda global economic crisis.

It is estimated that one fifth of world oil consumption is transported through the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, which necessarily involves crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Since the United States declared war against the Islamic Republic on February 28, very few ships have managed to overcome the blockade implemented by the Iranian authorities.

This strategy pursues a couple of objectives: to punish the United States and its allies by eventually leaving them without fuel, then, Given the lack of crude oil and its derivatives, the prices of most products are increasing until reaching values not recorded since 2008.

That year, Brent—a variety of crude oil extracted from the North Sea—was priced at $147.50 per barrel.

The other benefit that Iran intends to take advantage of consists of the possibility of permanently establishing a toll booth where a million-dollar percentage would be paid for each cargo transported, but it is noted that the money would be covered in yuan, this for using the aforementioned sea route to transit through them.

During his participation in the Health Care Summit organized by the news outlet PoliticalSenator Markey referred to the consequences of not analyzing in detail the implications of having challenged the government in Tehran.

“The administration has a big problem right now because it has created an energy apocalypse in the Strait of Hormuz, a situation that is affecting everything,” he said.

Immediately afterwards, the Democrat, who is also part of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, emphasized that citizens would remember everything that is happening when they show up to vote during the midterm elections.

“Trump is fundamentally trying to make people forget this threat, but ironically he has put it into play with his invasion of Iran. And all these energy and climate problems come together again in a big story that will be increasingly threatening for Republicans this fall,” he pointed out.
