Autonomous driving is no longer a distant promise and is beginning to take shape in Europe. tesla he already took the first step with his FSD systemwhich began to be deployed in the Netherlands, and with that a key doubt appeared among users. Not all of the brand’s cars are ready to enter this new stage.

Expectation is high, especially among those who had already paid for this feature a long time ago.

However, the reality is much more technical than many imagined. It is not enough to have purchased the option, the real filter is in the hardware that each vehicle has.

The decisive factor is in the hardware

The FSD system in its most recent version is only available, for now, in models that incorporate the so-called Hardware 4. This component is responsible for processing all the information that comes from cameras and sensors, and is key to executing the system’s artificial intelligence.

tesla began including this hardware in its cars since 2023 in the United States and Chinaand later in Europe. If someone wants to know if their vehicle is effectively matched, they can check it directly on the car screen, within the tool section.

The brand’s strategy aims to move forward with the newest models first. It is not a minor decision, because the performance of the system depends largely on the processing capacity of the vehicle.

Older models are on hold

For those who drive Teslas manufactured between 2019 and 2023 with Hardware 3the outlook is more uncertain. These cars can use FSD in the United States, but with a lighter version of the tool.

The possibility of physically updating these vehicles to the new hardware was an idea that circulated at the time, even mentioned by Elon Musk. However, everything indicates that this path is no longer on the table.

The reason is simple. Hardware 3 does not have enough power to run the most advanced version of the system. The company itself recognizes it and is working on an alternative.

Ashok Elluswamy, head of tools and artificial intelligence, explained that “Once version 14 is completely finished, the company plans to work on a lighter version.” That would be the solution so that these models are not completely left out.

Europe puts stricter rules

Beyond the technical, the European context adds another layer of complexity. The regulations are more demanding than in the United States and require that each advance go through more rigorous reviews.

The Dutch authorities make it clear. “The Dutch-European version of the fully autonomous driving tool will not be exactly comparable to the US version due to differences in regulatory processes.” In addition, they warn that there will be “more strict supervision of the driver’s attention to the road.”

This means that even compatible models may receive limited or adapted features depending on local laws.

What happens to the FSD when selling the car

Another point that raises doubts has to do with resale. Not all buyers of a used Tesla will automatically inherit the FSD.

If the system was active via monthly subscription, the benefit is not transferred. The new owner will have to hire him on his own.

On the other hand, if the FSD was acquired through full payment, it remains associated with the vehicle, unless the owner has previously transferred it to another Tesla in a specific promotion.
