International basketball loses one of its most emblematic figures. Oscar Schmidt He died this Friday at the age of 68 in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, according to his family, ending a career marked by historic figures and constant presence on large stages.
The news came after the former player was hospitalized after experiencing sudden discomfort at his residence. Although no specific details about the cause of his death were released, The athlete had been facing a brain tumor for 15 years, a condition that accompanied him during a long period of his life.
In a statement released by those close to him, his attitude towards the disease was highlighted. He was described as an example of “determination, courage and love of life,” words that reflect the approach with which he went through his deepest process off the court.

A historic legacy on and off the field
The Brazilian Basketball Confederation expressed its recognition by considering Schmidt an “eternal symbol” of the sport, underlining his impact on both the competition and the environment that surrounded him. The message included a thank you for what he represented “on and off the field.”
The Brazilian left a mark that is difficult to match in statistical terms. With 49,737 points scored throughout his careerestablished himself as the top scorer in the history of basketball, a record that distinguishes him within the discipline worldwide.
His presence in international competitions was also constant. He participated in five editions of the Olympic Games, from Moscow 1980 to Atlanta 1996.a journey that kept him as a reference for his team for more than a decade. During that time, he became one of the most recognizable faces in Brazilian basketball.
Nicknamed ‘Holy Hand’, he had outstanding performances in key tournaments. He was part of the team that won the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987, where Brazil beat the United States in the final. He was also part of the team that won bronze in the World Cup in the Philippines in 1978.
His professional career took place mostly in Brazil, where he wore shirts for clubs such as Palmeiras and Flamengo. At international level, he played for Italian side Juvecaserta between 1982 and 1990, and for Spanish side Discussion board Valladolid between 1993 and 1995.
In 2013, Schmidt was inducted into the United States Basketball Hall of Fame. a recognition that cemented his place among the sport’s most influential figures.
