The president donald trump this Tuesday he urged the United Kingdom to exploit the vast oil deposits in the North Sea as a measure to alleviate the energy crisis caused by the war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a message posted on his network Social TruthTrump criticized the United Kingdom for refusing to tap into this key energy source, pointing out that Europe is going through a serious energy shortage. “It is a tragedy,” added the president.
The Republican claimed that Aberdeen, the largest seaport in northeast Scotland and a key center of the oil industry, should “be in full swing” but, instead, Norway is making “a fortune” selling its oil to the United Kingdom “at double the price,” he said.
Strategic situation in the North Sea
“The UK, which is better situated in the North Sea for energy purposes than Norway, should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL! It’s crazy that they don’t… AND NO MORE WINDMILLS!” he wrote.
The United Kingdom is the world’s advanced economy that will suffer a greater energy impact from the war in Iran, according to estimates published this Tuesday by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which lowered its growth forecast for the British economy from 1.3% to 0.8%.
Deposit exploitation
The British Government has banned new licenses to exploit oil and gas deposits in the North Sea as part of its policy to boost transition to clean energy.
Trump has been highly critical of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his refusal to become militarily involved in the Iran war and unblock the Strait of Hormuz, closed by Tehran in retaliation for the US and Israeli offensive.
