The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated this Tuesday that “There have been no specific responses” about the deaths of Mexican migrants in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), for which its Government has intensified diplomatic and legal actions.

“There have not been specific responses to each case”said the president during her morning press conference.

His reaction occurs after on Monday the Mexican Foreign Ministry reported the death of another compatriot in a detention center in Louisiana, adding at least 15 Mexicans have died in US immigration facilities since the return of President Donald Trumpto the White House in January 2025, in a context of increasing arrests due to stricter policies.

Given this situation, Sheinbaum indicated that Mexico has raised its diplomatic tone towards Washington.

A very strong letter was made. Yesterday there was a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Government of the United States,” he noted.

The president said that she also ordered to strengthen consular surveillance in immigration detention centers.

(Give) instructions to all consuls where there are detention centers of this United States Government institution of ICE to visit the detention centers daily. They visited them every week. Now I asked them to visit daily, if it is not the consul internally most, a person from the consulate,” he said.

Sheinbaum highlighted that they are also promoting legal actions at the international level “before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights” and the Government is “reviewing other United Nations bodies to denounce these practices in detention centers.”

“What we have requested is the investigation, because the investigation has to be carried out by the Government of the United States”he noted, while stressing that the conditions under which the deaths occurred must be determined, especially if there was “alleged mistreatment or a violation of human rights.”

He also recalled that Mexico has expressed its disagreement with immigration policies that have led to mass arrests “because there are many Mexicans whose only crime is not having papers.” EFE
