The accused of the Gilgo Coastline serial murders, Rex Heuermannadmitted this Wednesday to having strangled eight women and dumping their remains on Lengthy Island, New York, culminating a case that has tormented local communities for more than three decades.
In a long-awaited court hearing, Heuermann spoke calmly about the murdersconfirming that he dismembered some of the victims and tied others by the head and legs, as reported by CNN.
Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect living in Massapequa, has been in custody since July 2023.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to the murders of seven women, including four whose bodies were found on the Gilgo Coastline in 2010. As part of his guilty plea, Heuermann also admitted to murdering an eighth woman who had not previously been named.
Suffolk County Judge Timothy Mazzei asked Heuermann how he pleaded to each charge related to the women’s deaths. “Guilty,” Heuermann responded.
The prosecution asked Mazzei for life in prison without the possibility of parole. Heuermann’s sentencing is scheduled for June 17.
The guilty plea ends a case that dates back to 1993 and took decades to solve, frustrating the victims’ families who felt the investigation had not been taken seriously.
The case formally began with the disappearance in 2010 of Shannan Gilbert23 years old. The search for their whereabouts led to the discovery of at least ten sets of human remains, primarily those of young sex workers, along Ocean Parkway, kicking off the search for a suspected serial killer.
However, the investigation was stalled for more than a decade. Meanwhile, the Gilgo Coastline murders were the subject of an acclaimed nonfiction book, a Netflix movie, and true crime documentaries.
In 2022, Suffolk County created an interagency task force to reexamine the murders and soon gathered evidence against Heuermann using DNA, hair, phone records and witness testimoniesaccording to court records.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murder of three of the victims in the case known as “Gilgo Four.” Prosecutors later charged him with four more murders, which occurred in incidents dating back to 1993.
In total, he was charged with the murder of seven people: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack and Sandra Costilla. As part of his guilty plea, he also admitted to murdering Karen Vergata.
Following the guilty plea, Heuermann’s wife expressed that her thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.
“Their loss is immeasurable, and right now we must focus on them,” Asa Ellerup told reporters outside the courthouse. “I ask that you respect my family’s privacy as they go through this very difficult time.”
