An almost three-year-old girl, Helena Cochrane, She died in January of this year when an antique dresser, weighing approximately 80 pounds, fell on her while she was reaching for a toy in Texas.

The minor was a few days away from celebrating her third birthday, according to her mother, Taryn, 21, on social media.

“It happened so quickly and so silently, and our lives changed forever,” said the young mother. “The unimaginable happened.”

The mother seeks to alert other parents about the dangers at home

After the tragedy, Taryn decided to share what happened publicly to warn other parents about the importance of anchoring heavy furniture to walls.

“Guilt and shame almost consumed me knowing that if I had secured that dresser, my baby would still be here,” she wrote.

The mother explained that she never thought the furniture posed a danger due to its large size and weight.

“It wasn’t something I would have considered a threat, nor do many other parents,” he said.

In her message, Taryn insisted that household accidents involving furniture are more common than many families believe.

“Most of the time it happens because a curious child tries to climb or get up by leaning on a piece of furniture,” he said.

“But it only takes a second for something heavy to fall, and the consequences can be devastating.”

Also recalled that thousands of children are injured or killed each year in similar accidents involving tipping furniture.

How to prevent accidents with heavy furniture

Specialists recommend securing chests of drawers, bookcases and televisions using anchoring systems fixed to the wall to prevent them from collapsing.

The process is usually done using anti-tip straps, metal brackets, or special anchors connected to wall studs.

“Anchoring furniture takes very little time, but it can make all the difference in the world,” said the mother.

“If my story can help another family avoid a tragedy like this, then my daughter’s memory will be protecting others in a way that really matters.”
