Intelligence reports consulted by the weekly Zeta Tijuana indicate that “El Checo” operated in areas considered strategic for drug trafficking and the territorial dispute between criminal groups in the border region.

Two previous attacks

The criminal leader had previously survived two execution attempts, according to Zeta Tijuana.

The first attack occurred during the early hours of February 3, 2026when a convoy made up of more than twenty armed individuals tried to kill him. The second assassination attempt against Sergio Serrano was recorded on April 23, also during the early hours of the morning. Members of the Sinaloa Cartel entered the property by jumping the perimeter fence that surrounds the house; They set fire to a vehicle and, when they could not locate it, They kidnapped an adult woman identified by authorities as Serrano’s mother.

The woman was located by police officers who responded after reports of firearm detonations. She was found with visible signs of violence, alive, and taken to the facilities of the Contemporary State Prosecutor’s Office, where her statement was recorded.
