According to statements by the president to CBS News, it is planned to eliminate the tax and once prices drop, gradually reintroduce it. The federal gasoline tax in the United States has been in effect since 1993 when a fixed rate of $18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and $24.4 cents per gallon for diesel was established, this through the Omnibus Funds Reconciliation and with the purpose of financing roads, road structures and other public transportation projects.
Hence To suspend it would require the approval of a law of Congress and furthermore, its interruption for a period of time would cost the federal government hundreds of millions of dollars per week. As for the bailout proposal for some U.S. airlines that have been hit hard by rising fuel prices in recent months, the president simply said, “There really hasn’t been a bailout proposal. The airlines aren’t doing too badly,” he put it.
During the interview with CBS, Trump described Iran’s latest peace proposal as totally unacceptable. “It was a bad proposal, a stupid proposal, in fact, made by people who have no idea of the danger they are in, a very stupid proposal, poorly written and poorly presented,” said Donald Trump.
