Marco RubioUnited States Secretary of State, cpraised their meeting as positive with Pope Leo XIV during a visit to the Vatican this week, in the middle of diplomatic tensions between the White House and the Holy See because of the conflict with Iran.
Rubio explained that the meeting had a cordial nature and highlighted the Pontiff’s role as a spiritual leader.
“The Holy Father is, above all, a spiritual leader; that is his role, and obviously the Church has always acted in accordance with a mission of peace and respect for all humanity.”Rubio told reporters on Friday.
The official also noted that it was “a very cordial and important meeting”, in which both parties exchanged views on international issues.
The US expressed its position on Iran and the Middle East
During the conversation, Marco Rubio He informed the Pope about the conflict in the Middle East and the position of the United States regarding the situation with Iran.
The Secretary of State and Acting National Security Advisor indicated that he explained “why this was important and the danger that Iran represents to the world.”
The visit occurred amid international political tension and debate over American foreign policy.
Tension between the White House and the Vatican due to the conflict
The meeting occurred amid a public dispute between the United States government and the Vatican regarding the war with Iran.
The president donald trump has criticized Pope Leo XIV, whom he described as “weak in the fight against crime and disastrous for foreign policy” due to his comments on the US military operation in Iran.
In recent statements, he also stated that the pontiff “puts many Catholics in danger” because of his stance on the conflict.
“I think it is putting many Catholics and many people in danger”Trump said in an interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt, in which he also questioned the Vatican’s stance on Iran.
The United States remains in talks for a new nuclear deal with Iran, after the Trump administration withdrew from the previous agreement during its first term.
