The Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnickwill appear this Wednesday behind closed doors before the House Oversight Committee to answer questions about his connection to Jeffrey Epstein. With this, he becomes the first official of the trump cabinet to be part of the investigation.
Lutnick voluntarily agreed to the interview, which was transcribed after months of criticism over his relationship with Epstein, who was once his neighbor.
The secretary had previously stated that he considered Epstein as “disgusting”” and that, in 2005, she had decided not to be in the same room with him again after visit his mansion in New York.
Visit to Epstein’s private island
However, documents from the Department of Justice show that Lutnick planned to visit Epstein’s private island in 2012, years after he pleaded guilty to prostitution charges in 2008. His wife, four children and babysitters were on the trip, and Lutnick said he witnessed no inappropriate behavior during his stay.
The files also reveal a business agreement signed in 2012 between Lutnick and Epstein to acquire the advertising company Adfin. Additionally, Epstein donated $50,000 in 2017 in connection with a dinner hosted in Lutnick’s honor.
Lutnick has suggested that Epstein may have received a sweetheart deal in his first criminal case, exchanging compromising materials to obtain a light 18-month sentence. However, officials from the Trump administration and the FBI They have pointed out that there is no evidence that Epstein trafficked young women for third parties or that he possessed compromising information about high-profile people.
During recent statementsPresident Trump defended Lutnickcalling him “a very innocent guy” and indicated that he would be willing to testify.
Lutnick’s appearance will allow the committee to delve into the secretary’s relationship with Epstein, as well as the business deals and social events they shared, providing more clarity about public figures’ ties to the notorious sex offender.
