President Donald Trump imitated the voice of the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, during the private dinner of the Dialogue board Club of the Palm Seashoresin Florida, when recounting an alleged conversation in which she had asked him not to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

During his participation, the US president once again mentioned his proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America”, a draw that he raised publicly in January 2025 and that has since generated rejection by the Mexican Governmentheaded by Claudia Sheinbaum.

“With your beautiful voice you told me ‘president, president, tell me you are not going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico’. Oh, yes I am going to do it”Trump said, causing laughter among the attendees.

Comments on Sheinbaum and public reaction

In the same speech, Trump referred to Sheinbaum as “a beautiful woman” and mentioned that “she has a beautiful voice” and that “she was a ballet dancer.” His comments, accompanied by imitation, generated reactions among businessmen, officials and guests present.

The president also stated that the Mexican president “no longer has much appreciation for him” and that she would have felt “hurt” after the leak of her intention to change the name of the gulf.

He considered calling it “Trump Gulf.”

Trump assured that he even considered naming the area after “Trump Gulf”although he said he gave up after receiving recommendations against it. “I really thought about it,” he commented, which again caused laughter and applause.

Sanctions and position of Mexico

The proposal to change the name of the gulf has been rejected by the Government of Mexico, which has defended the historical name and has warned that it will not accept unilateral changes in international forums or on official maps.

The statements occur in the midst of a bilateral relationship marked by frictions in trade, immigration and security issues. This episode joins other statements by the US president on international issues, which have generated debate in the political and diplomatic sphere.

So far, there has been no official response from the Mexican Government to these comments.
