May is here and if you plan to shop at Costco during this month, there is an important fact you should know. The warehouse chain confirmed that it will stop operations in all its branches for a whole day. Here we explain the reasons behind this scheduled closure.

The closure of Costco stores is not due to internal problems or unexpected business changes. The company confirmed that its stores will remain closed on Monday, May 25this is because Memorial Day is commemorated, a federal holiday in the United States.

As it is one of the 11 official federal holidays, The company joins the organizations that, like every year, suspend activities during this significant date in which military personnel who died in service are honored.

For many Americans, it is clear that government offices, banks, schools, stock markets and postal services are not operating. However, unlike Costco, many stores remain opentaking advantage of the day to increase your sales.

Even though Costco’s decision to close on holidays surprises many of its customers to date, the reality is that this is part of its corporate policy to allow its workers to also enjoy the holidays with their families. Following the closure on May 25, all branches will resume normal activities on Tuesday, May 26.

If you think that this scheduled closure may interfere with your purchasing plans, it is better to be prepared and anticipate your visit to mitigate the damage.

What other days will Costco close in 2026?

Although most supermarkets in the United States only close on key dates such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, Costco maintains a longer list of non-business days. In all, the chain closes seven times a yearincluding a date that is not considered a federal holiday.

The days when Costco does not operate include:

  • New Year.
  • Easter Sunday (not a federal holiday).
  • Memorial Day.
  • Independence Day (July 4).

How much does it cost to be a Costco member?

The company currently offers three membership levels:
