The video clip of the song, performed by Luis Fonsi next to Daddy Yankeereached a new milestone by surpassing the 9 billion views on YouTube, reaffirming his status as a pillar of global pop culture.
The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Luis Fonsi celebrated the news on Sunday through his social networks. With an emotional message of gratitude, the artist highlighted the unconditional support of the public who, nine years after the premiere, continue listening to the song with the same intensity as the first day.
This new record positions “Despacito” as the most viewed video by a male artist in the entire history of the platform.
A legacy of records
Beyond the numbers, the permanence of the song is what surprises the industry the most. “Despacito” dominated Billboard’s “Hot Latin Songs” chart for 35 consecutive weeks in first place and accumulated a total of 56 weeks at the top, an unprecedented feat.
Besides, The song has seven Guinness World Records. and was included by the magazine Rolling Stone among the 50 best Latin pop songs of all time.
The cultural impact of the melody was such that, at the time, the magazine time noted her as a unifying force in times of divisionhighlighting its ability to connect the non-Latin world with rhythms in Spanish.
