A Costco employee was shot and killed on Saturday in the parking lot of one of their stores in Strongsville, Ohio.
The victim, identified as Randy Corrigan, 61, fFound with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and right arm when Strongsville Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 5:45 p.m., according to WOIO.
Attempts to help and death
Before the authorities arrived, several citizens tried to give him first aid. Subsequently, the agents began emergency maneuvers when they found that Corrigan was still conscious, although his condition was rapidly deteriorating.
The injured man was taken to MetroHealth Clinical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Christian Bryant, 22, originally from Texas, was arrested at the scene and faces murder charges.
Witnesses indicated that the suspect was walking towards the entrance of the establishment with a drum-type charger visible. According to court documents, Corrigan approached him to warn him that he could not enter the building armed.
Shooting sequence
According to the preliminary investigation, Bryant allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic weapon and initially fired once at the victim, then fired multiple shots consecutively..
Authorities also noted that Corrigan was carrying a knife at the time of the confrontation.
The defendant claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that he was approached “for no reason” by a man with a knife. However, the court recommended that he not issue statements without the presence of his lawyer.
The case was filed in Berea Municipal Court, where Judge Sean Kilbane set bond at $5 million for the defendant.
The investigation will be turned over to a grand jury, as authorities continue to gather evidence.
Corrigan’s relatives described him as a supportive man, dedicated to caring for his 86-year-old mother, for whom he was the best supporter.
In addition, they highlighted his commitment to his work and his affable nature with colleagues and clients.
A fundraising campaign organized by his niece has raised more than $25,000 to cover funeral expenses.
The authorities reiterated that the judicial process will determine criminal responsibilities in a case that remains under investigation.
