A shooting inside a Chicago hospital left one police officer dead and another in critical conditionafter a suspect in custody managed to access a firearm and opened fire on the officers.
The incident occurred at the Endeavor Health Swedish Health center, where the detainee had been transferred hours before to receive medical attention, an Endeavor Health spokesperson told Fox Recordsdata Digital.
Chronology of events
According to authorities, the suspect was taken to the hospital around 9:00 in the morning and underwent security checks by the center’s deepest.
However, around 11:00 am, The individual managed to get hold of a weapon, shot at the two officers who were guarding him and subsequently fled the scene.
The injured officers were immediately taken to the same hospital, where one of them was declared dead. The second remains in critical condition, “fighting for his life,” according to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
Response from the authorities
The suspect was recaptured shortly after the attack and remains in custody. According to preliminary reports, he had initially been arrested for alleged robbery.
During the operation, the authorities recovered at least one firearm, while subsequent investigations point to the possible existence of a third weapon, the origin of which has not yet been clarified.
The hospital confirmed that no patients or staff members were injured during the shooting.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described the event as a tragedy for the city and expressed solidarity with the families of the affected officers.
“One of our agents will not return home,” he declared during a press conference, while asking for prayers for the injured officer.
For his part, Superintendent Snelling highlighted the risks inherent in police work, emphasizing that officers face dangerous situations daily.
Following the incident, the hospital temporarily closed its facilities while law enforcement carried out the investigation.
Authorities also implemented traffic restrictions in the surrounding area, including detours on public transportation routes.
The medical center assured that there is no active threat and that the situation is under help watch over.
The circumstances that allowed the detainee to access a weapon within a custodial environment remain under investigation.
