Many drivers associate the greatest risk on the roads with early morning or hours of darkness. However, the data show a very different scenario.

The period with the most accidents in the United States occurs when thousands of people are still immersed in their daily activities and the streets are especially congested.

An analysis conducted by Mercury Insurance identified that the interval between 3:00 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. It concentrates the largest number of traffic accidents in the country. The conclusion comes after studying complaints registered over a period of five years.
Far from being a coincidence, the specialists found a repetitive pattern that is explained by the combination of school traffic, work trips and a high presence of pedestrians and cyclists.
Ten minutes with a high level of risk
The 3:00 pm slot coincides with one of the most active times of the day. At that time, many students leave classes, parents move to pick them up, and the flow of workers returning to their homes begins to increase.

According to the study, more than 61,000 people were involved in accidents during those ten minutes over the five years analyzed. The figure made that short period the one with the highest incidence of accidents in the entire country.
Experts consider that the concentration of vehicles and the amount of stimuli present on the roads contribute significantly to increasing the risk.
Lesions increase an hour later
Interestingly, the time with the most accidents is not necessarily the most dangerous in terms of severity.
Mercury Insurance detected that 4:00 pm registers a higher proportion of accidents with injuries. One reason is that traffic begins to move more fluidly, allowing for higher speeds.
Added to this is the fatigue accumulated after several hours of activity, a component that can reduce attention and affect the reaction capacity of some drivers.

Weekends tell a different story
The patterns change when Saturday and Sunday arrive. On those days, the highest concentration of accidents occurs between 12:00 pm and 12:10 pm
The explanation is related to the increase in recreational trips, family gatherings and short trips that usually begin around noon.
During that period, about 19,000 people were involved in accidents, while approximately 9% suffered some type of injury.

How to reduce risks while driving
Specialists recommend avoiding, when possible, times of greatest traffic congestion. If this alternative does not exist, they advise increasing the safety distance, paying special attention in school zones and minimizing any distractions.
It is also important to maintain adequate speeds and anticipate possible movements of pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.
Although no schedule is completely risk-free, knowing when accidents occur most can help you make better decisions and drive more cautiously on American roads.
