Few models can boast of remaining relevant after five decades on the market. The Honda Accord is one of them.

As the industry moves towards electrification and SUVs dominate a good portion of sales, The Japanese sedan maintains a privileged position in the United States and is at the doorstep of a brand that very few vehicles have managed to achieve.

Honda confirmed that the Accord is approaching 15 million units sold in the United Statesa figure that coincides with the 50th anniversary of one of the most important names in the company’s history.
The celebration comes at a time of transformation for the brand, which seeks to balance its offer between combustion models, hybrids and future fully electric vehicles. Even so, the Accord remains a major piece within that strategy.
A model that found its place in the market
The story began in June 1976 with a vehicle very different from the one we know today. The first Accord was a three-door hatchback that was committed to efficiency and practicality in an era marked by concern over fuel consumption.
Over the years, the model grew in size, refinement and technology until it became one of the most recognized midsize sedans on the American market.
The big turning point came in 1982 when Honda began production of the Accord in the United States.. That decision made it possible to bring the product closer to local consumers and significantly strengthened the presence of the Japanese brand in North America.
The importance of manufacturing in the United States
A large part of the Accord units sold have left the Marysville plant in Ohio. The facility has special value to Honda because it was the company’s first factory in the United States and because it made the Accord the first continuously locally produced Japanese car in the country.
That bet helped consolidate an extensive network of suppliers and strengthened the link between Honda and the US market. It also allowed the model to become one of the most recognized vehicles in its segment.

The sedan that continues to evolve
The success of the Accord is not only explained by its track record. It also has a lot to do with its ability to adapt to the new demands of drivers without abandoning the features that made it current.
According to data shared by the company, the model currently represents about 25% of the midsize sedan segment in the United States. In addition, more than half of recent sales correspond to hybrid versions, reflecting growing consumer interest in more efficient alternatives.
The 2026 range incorporates new improvements in connectivity, a more advanced multimedia screen, wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Autowireless charging system for phones and adjustments aimed at improving the driving experience.
