The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Robert Velascoreported this Tuesday that the call he had on Monday with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in which They reviewed cooperation in security, migration and trade, it occurred in a “very cordial, very respectful” environment.
“Yesterday we had a call with the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio (…). A conversation in a very cordial, very respectful atmosphere“said Velasco, who pointed out that the dialogue lasted about half an hour.
The official explained in the daily presidential conference that one of the main topics was cooperation in border security and combating organized crime.
“We talked about the cooperation we have in terms of security, about moving forward naturally on the principles that we have already talked about many times under the cooperation program on border security and law enforcement,” he indicated.
Velasco announced that this week a bilateral working meeting will be held in Mexico City with representatives of both governments to follow up on these efforts.
Regarding the results achieved, he highlighted that Mexico presented progress in the fight against drug trafficking and irregular migration.
“There is a 76% decrease in fentanyl seizures at the border between the beginning of the administration of President (of Mexico, Claudia) Sheinbaum and the last month for which we have records“, held.
Likewise, he pointed out that both countries will continue working on immigration matters “always with respect for human rights.”
The chancellor also reported that they addressed the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) and other trade issues.
“We talked about the importance of reaching a successful outcome with the conversations that are underway on this matter.“, said.
According to Velasco, Rubio informed him that he is closely following up on these issues and that both will continue to be in contact to explore a future in-person meeting.
The call occurs in a context of tensions between both countries. Last week, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, asked the US ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, to respect the country’s internal affairs after a series of public exchanges related to security and the fight against drug trafficking.
